PostSubject: The Reawakening of Power   Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:28 pm

The night in Caer Saethu had begun like any other.

The twins, Sirran and Selene, were fast asleep in their cribs and Rhea had gone to bed after a hot bath. He was sitting in the library reading over an old text on ancient elven culture with a glass of wine on the table beside him. He leaned back in the plush arm chair and sighed.

It just wasn't the same.

Reading over histories and other obscure texts scratched the itch somewhat, but there were no arcane runes to decipher. He had spent hours going over charts and maps, but it was poor substitute to one who had once moved instantaneously from one location to another at will. And while he could draw on the power of artifacts and scrolls to cast spells...

The power was not his.

Malan's life had not been devoid of satisfaction. He loved his wife dearly and enjoyed spending time with his children. Other black robed wizards considered this a weakness. However, they simply didn't understand. One could still rise to power and have one beside them. And should any go after his family?

Then Takhisis herself would weep at the suffering he would have unleashed on them.

But tonight wasn't the same.

There was something nagging at the back of his mind. Something about the book, the room, Caer Saethu... something was just... off. He set the book aside and rose to his feet. He briefly considered alerting Rhea to a possible threat, but decided to investigate a little more.

He'd never hear the end of it if he had sounded an alarm over a mouse in the corner of the room.

He walked the halls of the castle peering about all the while noticing the strangeness of everything around him. It began to dawn on him. The problem was not in the castle...

It was within himself.

The castle had not changed. Merely his perception of it. And that meant one thing...

He opened the curtains and looked out at the night sky. Solinari and Lunitari hung in their proper place in the heavens and just peeking over the horizon...

Nuitari.

Visible to his naked eye.

He hurried down the stairs to the vault. This could only mean one thing. And time would tell if the glimmer of hope that was lodged within would bear fruit.

The heavy door to the vault slowly swung open and Malan's shadow stretched out along the floor of the darkened vault.

Magic swords that he picked up in his adventures along with other powerful artifacts sat along the walls on pedestals and shelves. Some were trophies. Others were artifacts best kept out of people's hands. And a few were simply things he wanted for himself.

But they were not why he was there.

Two black stone bookcases sat along one of the walls. They contained his old spell books and the spell books of his father, Malanthius. He picked up one of his own spell books. The oldest one on the shelf containing the simple spells he learned at the beginning of his adventuring days.

He opened the book and flipped to one of the simplest cantrips he knew... Light. He studied the arcane symbols on the page and they slowly and grudgingly entered his mind as he committed them to memory. Sweat covered his body at the effort, but he refused to be discouraged.

He began the casting of the spell.

It was hard. Almost as though he were first learning to cast greater ruin or hellball. The words of power were spoken and the arcane symbols drawn into the air with his fingers. But it seemed to be without effect.

"Come on you &%#^$..." muttered Malan under his breath as he forced his will into the spell.

Slowly but surely a faint glow appeared in the air. It began as less than a flickering candle light but slowly grew and grew until the vault was bathed in white light.

Malan leaned upon a nearby desk and smiled.

"Now we're getting somewhere."

He turned his attention back to the spell book to look at the next spell.
