The sun burned high in the sky over the Plains of Dust. A young black robed wizard walked along the old roads leading to Tarsis. The young man shimmered as the desert heat was deflected by a resist elements spell. Malan disliked wasting magic on frivolous things. However the young man already had an even greater dislike for the Plains of Dust, considering the nightmarish irritation of the Sirrionite tomb he and Rhea had recently explored.

The sooner he completed his business the better.

He was surprised to find that Tarsis was not as he had expected. He had heard that a black robed wizard ruled the city, and truth be told he thought to see statues and the like displaying "the glory of their new master". But he saw none of those things. It was as though the Lord of Tarsis simply didn't care.

But he was not here for politics. He had heard word that his father's old spellbooks had made their way to Tarsis. Snuck out of the Tower by some enterprising black robe no doubt. One would have thought that he was motivated by sentiment, but all his father had been to him was a name on a letter written to his mother and a character in an old journal that was given to him years ago.

Malanthius had cared little about the boy.

And in turn the boy had cared even less about him.

Malanthius had been a wizard of note though. And as Malan saw it, there was bound to be plenty of arcane value in the books. Whether that was true or not was soon to be revealed.

Malan made his way through the winding streets towards the address he had been given. The books would be his by day's end.

((to be continued by me))

((apparently post #2 was erased in the forum reset. I'm just moving on. Your fault if you didn't read it Razz))

The shelving shattered spilling its contents, and some foul smelling concoction, over the young wizard as the spell flung him through it. This was the fourth shelf and the second cabinet. It was rather clear that Abraxis was toying with the boy.

Spells and counterspells lit up the shop like fireworks and truth be told "Alziz's Magic Imporium" was starting to resemble one of those merchant stalls outside. The roof was missing now and the dust floating in the air shimmered in the sunlight that streamed in. The walls were mostly gone as well. It was only by the grace of the gods that what was left of the shop stood at all.

Malan pulled himself to his feet with a grunt and coughed up a little blood. While his magical powers were close to equivalent to the Lord of Tarsis, the older wizard had the advantage of experience. He managed to raise a spell mantle just in time to block a death spell sent his way.

It would seem that play time was over. If he wished to walk out of this situation he would have to become very creative very quickly.

"Tell me Little Mouse," taunted Abraxis as the floor next to Malan exploded in purple flames. "Have you much left to fend off the teeth of the Dragon of Tarsis?"

Unfortunately the young wizard did not. He had burned through the vast majority of his magic fending off the wizard's attacks. He was down to cantrips. And somehow summoning a rabbit out of a hat and flinging it at Abraxis did not seem like a practical combat maneuver.

The staff struck Malan across the jaw and sent the young man sprawling on his back. He started to get back up, but his attacker's boot drove him back to the ground. Abraxis stood over top of his prey and began to cast.

"Any last words before I send you to the Abyss boy?"

Malan gave a rasping cough and uttered something that the older wizard could not hear. A little more blood trickled out of the corner of the mouth as he tried to speak again. Abraxis leaned down and glared at Malan.

"What?"

The mithril dagger leapt out of Malan's sleeve into his hand and was then thrust straight into the throat of the wizard. The wizard staggered backwards, clawing at his throat and fell to the ground dead."

"I said..." Malan crawled over and retrieved the magic dagger. "Mice have teeth too."

He took the wizard's death mask and the bag containing the spell books. He did not know what Tarsis' fate would be, nor did he care. Let the citizens fight over the corpse.

He was done here.

He took a swig of a healing potion and fought his way to his feet. He staggered out what was left of the door and made his way back out into the desert.

He was heading home.
